Reading a school calendar for days off

A school-year calendar answers one question for families: on which weekdays is nobody at school to watch the children? Here is how to find them all. Bellgap does not publish any school's dates; use your own school's calendar.

1. Get the right calendar

Use the calendar your child's school or district publishes for the current year, and check it again when the district posts a change. Garfield Heights City Schools posts its calendars on its own website, garfieldheightscityschools.com; other districts do the same on theirs. If anything there differs from what you typed into Bellgap, the school's calendar is right.

2. Look for every kind of day off

Holidays
Weekday holidays when school is closed. They are usually printed in bold, but check the smaller ones too.
Breaks
Winter, spring and other breaks. On a board, add a whole break at once with "From" and "To"; Bellgap adds only the weekdays.
Teacher work days
Often marked "no school for students", "staff development" or "professional day". Staff work; children stay home.
Conference days
Some schools cancel classes for parent-teacher conferences. Read the key on the calendar: it may be a full day off or only an early release.
Early-release days
School ends early. Bellgap counts these as half a day of leave for whoever covers.
Closures
Weather or emergency closures cannot be dated ahead. Many families keep a few days of leave or a back-up helper in reserve; the Gap Count has a "spare days" box for that guess. When a closure happens, add it to the board as a Closure day.

3. Do not forget the edges

  • The first and last days of the year are sometimes half days.
  • Different grades can start on different days. Check the dates for your child's grade.
  • A calendar can change during the year (make-up days, moved holidays). When it does, change your board.

4. Then plan the cover

Count first (Gap Count), then put the dates on a board and pick who covers each one. Early in the year is the best time: day camps for breaks fill up, and leave is easier to book far ahead.
